During my consultations, I’ve been working to improve my approach to discussing pricing, which has often felt intimidating for me. I’ve noticed that I tend to avoid discussing costs until after I’ve started providing the service. This inclination to keep things non-confrontational stems from my desire to build rapport, but I’ve come to realize that this strategy can actually undermine the trust I want to establish with my clients.
I’m fully committed to becoming more open and transparent about pricing, as I know it’s essential for fostering a strong and honest relationship. I recognize that I haven’t valued myself enough to assert my pricing confidently. In the past, when I attempted to bring up prices, I struggled with how to wrap up the conversation. I’d often find myself saying something like, “Based on everything we talked about today, you’re looking at between $300 and $400 for my service,” only to be met with silence. In those moments, I could feel the tension building inside me.
To ease that discomfort, I would instinctively say, “I totally understand, that’s a lot of money, so if you prefer, we could do a partial service instead.” Yet, in doing so, I often ended up delivering a full-service experience, spending my entire day and using a lot of materials, only to shortchange myself in the process. I’m learning that it’s okay to have these discussions—both for my clients’ understanding and for my own peace of mind.
Being upfront about pricing isn’t about justifying costs—it’s about owning my worth as a stylist. My clients deserve transparency, and I deserve to feel confident in what I charge.
If you’re considering a hair transformation and want a personalized consultation with clear pricing upfront, I’d love to chat and create a plan that works for you.
