Why Pre-Consultation is Essential for a Successful Hair Color Appointment

Writing a script can be incredibly powerful, especially when it comes to managing client communications. I often use my iPhone notes to craft specific scripts, which I can quickly send out whenever I receive a text message or phone call from a client. This allows me to set the right tone and address their inquiries consistently.

For instance, when a new client reaches out to schedule a balayage appointment, it’s important to gather the right information before proceeding. Balayage is a process that requires significant time and attention—typically around four to five hours. Therefore, I like to ensure that clients don’t show up with hair that is longer than mid-back, or hair that is unusually thick, as this can affect the appointment.

I prefer not to quote prices over the phone without first obtaining a clear picture of the client’s hair. To facilitate this, I ask them to have a friend take a photo that shows the front, side, and back of their head, as selfies often fail to capture the hair’s true condition. Additionally, I request an inspiration photo from social media to better understand their desired outcome.

During our conversation, it’s crucial to discuss their hair history, including any color services they’ve had done and when their last coloring occurred, particularly if they’ve used box dye. Having this information allows me to determine whether I can take on the client and give them a more accurate estimate of the expected results.

Establishing good communication is key before tackling a significant service like balayage. Often, clients may hold unrealistic expectations, particularly those with dark hair that has grown out from a previous balayage, who then hope to achieve a platinum blonde look in just one appointment. That’s why it’s essential to thoroughly consult with them to manage expectations and ensure we’re both on the same page before proceeding with this demanding task.
